octane number

octane number
1. A measure of petrol's resistance to pre-ignition or "pinking", which is the sound made by an engine when pre-ignition occurs, particularly at low revs and high load. Two measures are used, for low speed and high speed pre-ignition. ULSP in the UK typically has a MON (Motor Octane Number) of 85 and a RON (Research Octane Number) of 95. SULSP and LRP have a RON of 97/98.
2. Measurement of the resistance of gasoline to explosive preignition, also known as knocking. Reference is to 2,2,4-trimethylpentane (isooctane) mixtures with n-heptane, with pure isooctane defined as 100.
3. The antiknock quality of motor and aviation gasoline below 100 octane is expressed by a numerical scale which is based on the knocking tendencies of two pure hydrocarbons. One, normal heptane, has an assigned value of zero in the knock rating scale. The second, iso-octane, has an assigned octance number of 100.
